Gumiho / The Nine-Tailed Fox - A Supplementary Tale by Jo Hyun Jae, Kim Tae Hee

Gosh, I can't believe that I actually like this Jo Hyun Jae more and more. He reminds me so much of Leon Lai.  Anyway, the Nine-Tailed Fox is a really dumpy drama of these human beings who turn into fox like warriors at night to maintain the balance of man and fox and one of them is Kim Tae Hee. Jo Hyun Jae is a detective who is tracing the vicious murder cases where internal organs are missing  and he suspects organ trade. The two cross path but this is not the first time because long time ago, they were childhood friends.

The Ballad of Seo Dong by Jo Hyun Jae, Lee Bo Young, Ryu Jin

We are now up to episode 30 and man, I was writhing and moaning in my seat at the end of each episode complaining how much more they are going to make Seo Dong suffer. Man, this is such a good drama.  It not only talks about the steadfastness of love but the loyalty to a cause and analytical thinking and strategies.

Rondo by Yutaka Takenouchi, Choi Ji Woo

This is like Infernal Affairs but with a Japanese-Korean combo. Hong Kong should be showing it just now only.  But yes, Takenouchi fans should watch it.

神鵰俠侶 The Return of Condor Heroes 2006 (China version)

I need to post this link to the OST for this series. I've been listening to it many times over the last few weeks and it's so good. The first entry has Huang Xiao Ming singing in it, and he is also in the fourth track.  Sigh...I have been composing images in my mind as I listen to each song and I want to draw Gou'Er and Xiao Long Nu in pen and ink and animate it a little with 30 seconds song clips. The more I improve in drawing, the more I want to do it. That is actually my goal, to draw imaginary landscapes with imaginary characters with Asian background. This music is just perfect for it.

My favorite track of course is the theme song itself called 天下無雙 by Zhang Jing Ying, the second track on the playlist. Beautiful voice and music. I've translated it here.

新上海灘 Once Upon a Time in Shanghai by Huang Xiao Ming, Sun Li

After hearing so much about this new Chinese TV drama, I'm going to watch it after I posted this trailer or watch it here at youtube that has Huang Xiao Ming singing with Sun Li, the female co-star, who I realized just now is the one who played the blind girl in Jet Li's Fearless. And over at youtube, they have long clips of the drama already!!

Romeo and Juliet by Takizawa Hideaki, Nagasawa Masami

Last night my kids and I watched the modern version of Romeo and Juliet. Good lord, just the name makes us laugh. When the first scene of our Romeo came on, we were rolling on the floor laughing. Never thought Tackey would play the role of a garbage man.  My daughter and I had the same immediate reaction. My daughter laughed hilariously and said, "If Tackey is really a garbage man in our area, I would be out there every Tuesday morning waiting for him with my garbage." I chimed in and said, perhaps the whole street would be lined with moms waiting with their garbage for the garbage man. Alright, correction, so he's not a garbage man, but just a recylcing man.  The plot is predictable. Rich man's daughter meets with garbage man and couldn't marry him and commit suicide.  hahahaha....

Hotelier by Bae Yong Jun

For the last few weeks, I have been watching Hotelier, the 2002 TV drama by Bae Yong Jun. This is my first Bae Yong Jun drama after watching him in Untold Scandal. Out of the 20 episode drama, the first half was quite cute. The story is about Frank Shin played by Bae, a financier specialized in corporate takeovers in the US, decided to take up a hostile takeover of Seoul Hotel in Korea after he bumped into an assisant manager of Seoul Hotel, Jin Young, played by Song Yun Ah.  I like the teasing and the chasing, and when Frank Shin professed his love to Jin Young locked in between corridors, my daughter and I were laughing so hard.  In real life, this would never ever happen...never. That's why it is so funny. No wonder why all the Japanese middle aged ladies fell in love with Bae Yong Jun. They are wishing for something only written in novels. Oivay...give me a break! hahahahaha.....

家族 Kazoku by 竹野内豊 Yutaka Takenouchi

I've have finally watched Kazoku with my mother in law and my daughter. Hmmm, what could I say about it? Yutaka is definitely extremely very good in showing his disappointment and his brave front scene after scene. He has so much obstacles that one wonders if he would break down but he broke down quite nicely.

クロサギ Kurosagi by Yamapi

After almost one year, we have finally finished watching this fun drama Kurosagi /The Black Swindler by Yamapi. Yamapi looks so cute in his disguises as the top swindler who tries to take down all other swindlers who hurt many people and family.  It's his mission to avenge his family who all died except himself because of such operations.  At the end of each case, he always return the money to those affected. After a week of Chinese movies, Korean dramas, and slow as molasses Japanese dramas, thank goodness we have this drama to fall back on. Yamapi is arguably one of the sexier looking young star in his own right, better than Jin, better than Kame, better than any Johnny's Entertainment junior crowd. With pouting lips, big eyes, great facial proportion, even my daughter has to admit he's the best looking one around.  My hope is that he would stay in young and cute roles like these for a while longer and stay away from love and romantic comedies as much as possible.  Some screencaps below.

咏春 Wing Chun by Nic Tse, Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao

I didn't know that Nic made a TV series called Wing Chun 咏春, a kung fu series with Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao. The trailer is 6 mins long with a lot of Nic in it. This 6 mins long trailer is dubbed in Mandarin not with their original voices. Oh, I hope they have one in Cantonese and with English subs so my kids could watch it!!! AAARRGGHH!!!! I like watching these old masters in movie. Much better than the wirefu!! Nic showed the 360 degrees kick in this one that Donnie Yen taught him in Dragon Tiger Gate! And nice photos!!!

Fugitive Lee Duyong by Hong Kyung Min, Lee Seon Gyun

We chanced on this Korean 4 episode drama of a cop (Lee Seon Gyun) trying to track down a culprit  (Hong Kyung Min) who seems to do all the dirty work of killing all the triad's enemies.  Hong Kyung Min was just a nobody and couldn't hurt a fly, let alone kill one after the other. Throughout the four episodes, we see him on the run, totally exasperated, prefering death than hiding. But what makes it even more fun was this detective Lee Seon Gyun who is so cocky.  OMG...Lee Seon Gyun was in Kangta's Loveholic in which he played a public prosecutor and I hated him every moment because he was so insistent and dull!! Downright dull...And now, to see him so cocky!! OMG...it was such a delight. I don't have enough of him.  Yeah, I just like cocky actors!  Gosh, love every moment of him, and love the story.  Scroll down for slide show. Hong Kyung Min is actually a rock ballad singer and you could sample a few of his songs here or his albums here: 1 , 2

Tatta Hitotsu no Koi by Kamenashi Kazuya

My daughter has eagerly waited for this drama by Kame for the entire season and finally we got around to watch it together.  This is much better than his last drama which we didn't manage to get past episode 2.  This is a simple story of a rich girl falling in love with a poor boy. Straight forward and simple with predictable obstacles from the parents.  But Kame looked a bit more watchable this time.  Less kid like and more range. At first, I didn't find it convincing especially after reading rumors in the news about him cohabitating with someone 20 years his senior in real life...I couldn't really buy the fact that he could be play a pure and innocent 20  year old in this series.  I made a mental note that perhaps Johnny's Entertainment is right in stopping all love affairs of these young stars so that their drama roles would be less clouded by our judgment.  But the acting of the supporting stars are really convincing - all very simple and energetic, eager to please. I like especially Ayuta, the friend who always helps these two to get together. It is an easy drama to watch, unlike Kimura's where you have to halt after one or two episodes because it is so intense and you have to catch your breathe.  So as a no-brainer, less soapy , and perhaps a tinge more sophisticated than the Korean dramas plagued with terminal illnesses if not deaths, we breezed through it in one sitting.  Out of 10, I'd give this a 7 claps.  The friend and mother trying to extort money is really old trick. That's 2 points off.   The simple story line has one point off.  This drama on average has only 11% rating, ranking the bottom 7th out of 16 dramas.  The winner this season was Dr. Koto about a doctor on an island at around 22%.
