Battle of Red Cliff by Tony Leung, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Lin Zhi Ling

It is reported that the set of Battle of Red Cliff has been dismantled for the scenes for the role Zhu Ge Liang and Zhou Yu for the moment because Tony Leung is still studying his Mandarin lines....hahahaha...ROFL... and will be rebuilt when he's ready.  For the moment, all other actors' scenes are being filmed and Takeshi is now filming in scenes with Lin Zhi Ling.  The movie shoot ends in August. Silk by Chang Chen, Yosuke Eguchi, Karena Lam

I never liked horror movies. They freak me out most of the time and I don't see myself as one who is brave enough to watch one at night by myself but I have to watch Silk because Chang Chen was in it. Arrghh...it got scary enough that I have to turn off the volume half way through the movie and only watch the visuals. Too scary for a skittish one like me. But sigh, it's still a good movie. Chang Chen is really very solid in his acting. I think this is the first time I have seen him wielding a rifle and using guns. He looked so determined, yet so soft. It's just the perfect combination.

The Host by Song Kang Ho

The Host sold remake rights to Hollywood and it would be remade into an American film. It was shown in the US in March this year but it didn't make the papers so not many people really bothered with it.  I suppose I would watch the remake this time. I would prefer watching more handsome actors for one, and I think the Americans could make it slightly scarier. There are parts in the middle that dragged quite a bit - especially the acting parts.

Nevertheless it did well enough for a Korean film but of course not as good as other Asian movies. Check my previous table here. I have included more Korean comparisons here between The Host and Taegugki.

I'm a Cyborg but it's Okay - by Rain AWARD FILM

Oh man, have I been doomed this weekend to poor or mediocre movies? We watched this debut work of Rain and I could only say one thing. This movie is ultra weird.  I can't believe my kids sat through the whole thing. My husband left us in 15 minutes.  I kept falling asleep.  First of all, Rain in that weird hairstyle does not help. Added to that, the female lead in her strange hairdo further worsens the situation. Rain is adequate but for him to turn cuckoo and trying to manage an even more cuckoo patient who imagines herself to be a robot ready to kill the hospital staff in order to get to her grandma is plain weird. Aiya...I don't recommend anyone to watch it unless you like strange, random type of movies. This one test one's patience....as much...if not more...than Asano Tadanobu's work.

日本沉沒 Sinking of Japan by Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, Kou Shibasaki

OMG, I don't know what to say about this movie except that my family was moaning through every minute of it as I made them watch it and the boys only wanted to see it when the disaster strikes and not the loving dialog exchange which takes up half the movie. My huband wonders if I'm out of my mind showing this movie. By American standards, this science fiction does not cut it. They had better leave science fiction to the Americans.

最好的時光 Three Times by Shu Qi, Chang Chen

That's right. It took me 2 years to finally watch Three Times as my library only just got this movie but YEOW~!!!! This is a great 3-story movie. I love the first story the most. Set in 1960's, Shu Qi as the brainless pool hall girl...hahaha...but the focus was not on Shu Qi in this story. The focus was on the sincerity of Chang Chen. OMG, the moment Chang Chen showed up, I was hardly breathing. He looked even more authoritative than any movie I have seen so far of his (I've only got 4 more movies to go of his entire film career). It doesn't matter if he was near baldness in this one...OMG...he was impressive. I guarantee you, in 3-5 years, he will win the awards that Tony Leung used to win. He was so good, so poised, and with perfect emotions for this movie. When he tried to locate her from place to place...that sincerity was so genuine and when they met again....aarrrgghhh...it was perfect, perfect, perfect.  But I think that hand clasp was 10 times more satisfying than any scene in this entire movie. I love the old music used, even the Chinese song, and above all, I love watching them travel by a little boat from place to place. This is so 1960's just like when I was growing up.

Daisy by Jung Woo Sung, Lee Jung Jae, Jeon Ji Hyun

If you haven't watched Daisy yet, you better buy or rent it asap. This movie filmed in Amsterdam was directed by Andrew Lau from Hong Kong, the director for Infernal Affairs, the script written by a Korean and apart from Jiang Da Wei, a Hong Kong actor playing the hired assasin boss, the rest are all Koreans. OMG, this movie is good!  This is exactly what Andrew Lau is capable of delivering, not the hyped up and misexecuted Confession of Pain.  The story is about Jung Woo Sung being a hired killer and the day he killed his first person, he bumped into Jeon Ji Hyun, a street artist in Amsterdam, who represents purity for him. Ever since then, he sent her flowers everyday at 4.15 pm but she didn't know he was the sender. She waited, and waited, until one day, Lee Jung Jae an Interpol agent appeared.

A Bittersweet Life by Lee Byung Hun

A Bittersweet Life is not a movie for kids because it is about Lee Byung Hun,  the right hand man of a triad ,carrying out his boss' order. In this movie, he was supposed to check on the boss' girlfriend to see if she has a lover and Lee Byung Hun was given the choice to handle the matter. Let's just say the first scene was real kick ass. Actually, whenever Lee Byung Hun fought, he was quite something especially his high sweep kick. No wonder why Jackie Chan likes Lee Byung Hun so much and claim that he is his half brother.

April Snow by Bae Yong Jun, Son Ye Jin

So, I understand that this Bae Yong Jun movie did better in Japan than in Korea. Perhaps Bae Yong Jun really only appeals to Japanese ladies...haha...I watched it tonight and I suppose it is quite delicately done. I read comments that it was a very very slow movie and so I was prepared to fall asleep but I didn't. The husband found out that his wife actually meeting her lover when their car crashed and the wife of the lover was looking after her husband day in day out just as Bae...The story started from there on.  Not a bad movie.  But only a Bae Yong Jun fan would watch it a second time. I think Bae is slightly overrated...hahaha...no doubt, he could act but he's hmmm....a tiny bit stiff... You could watch the official MV here. The music in the movie is good, especially the last song.

My Wife is a Gangster 3 by Shu Qi

This is definitely a no brainer for one hour 56 mins but enjoyable and bring some laughter to the house. I'm beginning to enjoy Shu Qi more as an actress and I'm glad she is the lead in this movie and not a useless role as in Confession of Pain. The story is simply Shu Qi, a gangster's daughter, sent to Korea to find her mother and also to avoid the rival gang whose son was killed by Shu Qi herself in a gang gathering. The funny parts are the translations that the interpreter was hired to translate for the Korean wacko gang to safeguard her and herself. Again, Korea excels in the laugh department. Very refreshing. I could stack this against A World of Thieves against the laugh department anytime. I haven't seen 1,and 2 and am not sure how this one is compared those three. Not a movie that I will rewatch but then, it's just entertainment.

The King and the Clown by Lee Jung Gi

Today I have shown this movie to my daughter and my husband finally and man, did my daughter cry! It is an even better movie when you watch it a second time. I still shed a tear in the end. My husband has to admit the Koreans are superb in storytelling in this movie. All hats off to the two main actors too. Sigh!!! The older jester won the best actor award for this movie in the Blue Diamonds Awards in Korea.

天下無賊 A World Without Thieves by Andy Lau, Rene Liu, Li Bing Bing

We finally watched A World Without Thieves 天下無賊 after three years...ha...what a neat film. It brought us smiles. A good old Hong Kong movie with good old Hong Kong dialog that make us feel at home without it being too cliche. Indeed it is a fabulous film for this time, I could enjoy once again the charisma of Andy, never mind his wrinkles and aged complexion. It is no wonder that he is a box office guarantee especially with these light hearted films, that he could still pull it off as funny as this age.
