Pirates of the Carribean 3, Part 2 news

I can't believe this. CYF's 20 mins scenes have been reduced to 10 mins only in China. They took the opening scenes of CYF because of violence and the part of him reciting Li Bai's poem  "Guan Shan Yue" (The Moon Shining over the Mountain on the Border) tells of the lonely life of an expat. Hypocrites!  Have you seen the TV drama Shanghai Bund by Huang Xiao Ming. It has gangster violence!!!

Transformers (The US movie)

Last night I saw the preview to the Transformers the US movie that would be released on July 4. I couldn't wait to take my boys to watch it. The beginning of the father taking the son to shop for a car is so funny. But more, the special effects would be incredible and the acting looks good already. When the kid remarked to his girlfriend that the transformer is "fully Japanese", I am so delighted. They acknowlegde the source of this idea. What Japan could not do in live action transformer type movies as in Casshern, a good special effects movie but with terrible script and acting, let the US do it for them. We were watching an old World War II movie last weekend called The Thin Red Line and we could see the superiority of American cinematography. Koreans have been emulating the US and would need a little while longer to catch up but they are the best of the crop out of Asia already. Don't miss the trailer at the official site here and if you have kids, you have to take them to see it.

War by Jet Li and Jason Statham

This is a movie that we would definitely watch - War, previously called Rogue. I am so excited to see this villain role finally come to reality and will be shown across the US on September 14. Never mind that it is another mindless American killer movie with little plot. My husband couldn't wait. I couldn't wait. For summary, go here. Trailer is up!!! And notice!! The trailer has his name first before Jason Statham.  It means he is now going mainstream. There is no black lead in this movie. Thank goodness!! He is finally going mainstream...Asian vs White!!!  I think Jet Li is now a name of great recall and the action crowd loves him.  He may become a better box office draw than Jackie Chan soon.

Laundry Warrior by Jang Dong Gun, Zhang Ziyi

Jang Dong Gun would be in a Hollywood movie with Zhang Ziyi called Laundry Warrior. Here is some news about it. I'm not too eager to watch Zhang Ziyi but this would be a good opportunity for Jang Dong Gun to go international.

Spiderman 3

We are not really into Spiderman. My kids watch these once and have no intention to watch it again over and over again like they do for Star Wars and Juraissic Park. So this US$258 million movie has recuperated its production costs already in the first three days.

Hannibal Rising by Gaspard Ulliel and Gong Li

We watched this movie. It is good!!! I don't know why people say it's gory. It's not at all. It's very exciting to see how Hannibal Lechter kept finding the culprits who killed his sister. Of great interest to us of course is the introduction of an Asian element in this movie. Gong Li is good as usual, but the show of Japanese swords, armory was very neat in a shady part of a castle. And the use of the sword to kill...man...that's a change! Neat movie. Almost as exciting as the Silence of the Lamb!!! Perhaps less in the plot but the action and pace makes up for it. Very well filmed!

The Last King of Scotland by Forest Whitaker

So Forest Whitaker won the Best Actor Award for The Last King of Scotland. We watched this movie and hmmm....what should I say about it? The movie was based on a novel by journalist Giles Foden. He wrote of a young Scottish doctor who wanted adventure and went to Uganda and his first encounter with the dictator Idi Amin was bandaging his hand after a run in with a cow. Idi Amin took an immediate liking to him and began to take the young Scot to be his personal adviser.  Before long, as Idi Amin became more and more ruthless with oppressing his enemies, the young doctor realized his mistake. There are many differences between the book and the movie and you could read them here. Giles foden created a doctor character because in real life, there once was an English soldier who was close to Idi Amin but this soldier also suffered incarceration and torture from time to time.

Was The Departed good?

So this film won the best film award, best screenplay and best director award for Martin Scorsese. (Source) Andrew Lau was interviewed in Hong Kong and clearly they thanked Marin Scorsese for thanking them on stage and to bring a Hong Kong movie to a new height of awareness to the international scene. Andrew will be shooting an American movie in July, August and will be in the US in March to make preparations. He would definitely invite Scorsese for a meal.

Mak Siu Fai, the co-director ,said that  when he heard that Scorsese was nominated, he wished that he would win. He was happy to be able to do something for his idol and he feels very honored too. This movie from 2002 to now is finally completed and represents the end of of a stage.  It also established the value of Hong Kong movies.

Casino Royale by Daniel Craig

Of all the 007, this got to be the one I dislike most. Daniel Craig looks more fit to be a Russian army officer than James Bond. The opening scene may have been impressive action wise bringing a realistic touch to the film but thereafter, he looked very plain and dull. He didn't have the suaveness of Roger Moore, and the classic looks of Sean Connery, the best 007 in my books. The movie Casino Royale itself is also very dull with less gadgetry and explosions than previous Bond movies.  What happened to snow ski and futuristic cars that appears all of a sudden, and all the scuba diving stints. It felt more like a Tony Jaa taken to a grander scale for a moment and then the rest just fizzes out. Brawniness alone doesn't make James Bond. We were all disappointed and do not look forward to the next 2 instalments by the same actor. And how I dislike the female lead. She speaks at the bottom of her throat. So annoying!!! I know it's a remake of the first Bond movie but can't them make it a bit more exciting? Why bother remake the slower films? Blah....

Apocalypto Directed by Mel Gibson

Apocalypto is incredibly intense and really not for the weak hearted. It's better than Shaka Zulu, The Last of the Mohicans, Dances with Wolves and Braveheart.  I was squirming and wanting to close my eyes at some points because it could be so violent. Arrrgh, my middle one wanted to run away but couldn't because it so magnetic at the same time because he wants to know what Jaguar Paw, the son of a rainforest tribal chief, would do to run away from capture from a rival tribe which is on the way to building "civilizations" along with human worship. I was totally sickened at that part. *faint* Not only does it reflect badly on pagan worship, it reflects on the danger of worshipping a god-like figure blindly and misusing that power. Accckkkk....acccckkk....*feeling really sick*

Miami Vice by Jamie Foxx, Colin Farrell, Gong Li

We have finally got the DVD and watched Miami Vice.  Alright, so it is not an Asian movie but it has Gong Li in it so it is in Asian movies category.  Not being a drug dealer cops movie fan, I am riveted in my seat waiting for the glorious Gong Li to appear.  OMG, when she appeared, she looked so good. The bitchier, the sluttier she is, the better she is.  *faints* How did China manage to produce someone like that! Incredible.  It was a joy to watch her.  Many Chinese female bloggers find her bland and flat but that is exactly what she is required to do. Any more vivacious, she wouldn't be a faceless businesswoman married to a drug lord.  Goodness me, what were they thinking about.  A jumpy little thing like Zhang Ziyi?  Besides, apart from Lin Zhiling from Taiwan who has the height and bustline but not the craftiness of Gong Li, no Chinese could match American hunks like Colin Farrell.  I am so glad to have seen her in this movie.  Her Cuban accent is so cute in the beginning but she lost a bit of it in the end.  I wish they kept her with makeup on but I suppose when she was on the run for her life, she wouldn't have makeup.  But yeah, old woman look at the end is fine with me.
