Hong Kong equals food

Having grown up in Hong Kong, I also reminisnced about the food that I grew up with and the restaurants that I went to. These photos I took when I visited Hong Kong  many years ago. I think they are all still there.






This shop is in the back streets of some street hawkers in North Point and people would commute to an hour or two with traffic to enjoy the hot clay pot rice made to your order.  It's usually rice laden with chicken and mushroom on top, or preserved sausage, or other type of mutton and beef dish.  The long wait outside the shop shows how popular it is especially on winter days.

This is Shanghai Restaurant along Kimberly Road in Tsim Sha Tsui, the tourist area in Kowloon side.  You walk in and is greeted by a great vat of this food - tofu, beancurd, octopus tentacles, fishballs, intestines.  This is where they serve the best pigeon tongues and thick egg noodles in soup with pork chop or stir fried thick noodles soaked in soya sauce.

This is Jordan Market which is close to my home.  How many times did I have to trudge my little feet and help my mother to carry the heavy bags of vegetables and meat from there!

This is Jordan fish market. They put red lamp shades to make the fish looks fresher as you open the gills to examine to see if it is bright red or not (meaning freshly killed as opposed to dark red.) This is the type of market that Tony Leung Chiu Wai made his movie called The Lunatics (1986)where he played a madman wielding a knife in the fish market. The movie also has Chow Yun Fat as a beggar too.  It's a depressing movie but Tony Leung was spectacular in the two scenes he was in when he looked idiotic and uncontrollable, and how he was tantalized by a puppet.  That's the scene that convinced me he is a great actor, right after I watched Infernal Affairs
