Thanks to Charlotte for posting this news about how Joel Silver chose Rain. Sounds like he did extensive watching of Rain...haha....but let's admit it. Rain is just too famous not to use when the chance presents itself. But seriously, I am not hopeful of this type of movie.
Joel Silver: "I was very satisfied with Rain, so I extended the invitation to him."
Rain's Hollywood debut movie ' Speed Racer's producer Joel Silver discussed reasons why he invited Rain to act.During the movie release press conference in Germany's Berlin Babelsberg Film Studio on the 31st, when asked by the media why Rain was asked to act, 'Speed Racer' producer Joel Silver said "I was very satisfied after looking up on all of Rain's material, and so I extended the invitation to him."According to a reporter at press conference, regarding the question of "How did you know of Rain and why you thought of asking him to act?", Joel Silver said, "I heard that Rain is extremely famous in Asia, and so I decided to pay more attention to him. After watching his concert, soap operas and all other DVD materials of his I was very satisfied, and then I extended the invitation to Rain, to which he happily accepted."In the beginning of this year, Joel Silver arrived in South Korea to obtain all of Rain's concert DVDs, and soap operas and movie material which Rain has been involved in. Shortly after the invitation to act in 'Speed Racer' was extended to Rain, and after going through several exchanges in opinoins everything was finally detemined. In February during the Berlin Film Festival Rain met with 'Speed Racer' directors the Wachowski Brothers for the first time, and experienced before hand the simulated vehicle race scene.Producer Joel Silver, directors the Wachowski Brothers, actors Susan Sarandon, Emile Hirsch, Matthew Fox, Christina Ricci etc attended the 'Speed Racer' movie release press conference with the attendance of more than 100 media representatives from around the world.During the one-hour long press conference, reporters inquiries concentrated mostly on producer Joel Silver, Rain was asked 3 questions. On the same day the announcement of the movie's race car(s) was released and publicized; attaining much focus from the global media.

Hmm, I'm not sure if I should be happy or not but I suppose I should. Rain will be in his first Hollywood movie Speed Racer to be directed by the folks who brought you Matrix. They start filming this summer and the movie will be released in May 2008.
"Speed Racer" was created by Tatsuo Yoshida and premiered as an anime series in Japan in 1967. The story centers on a teenaged Speed Racer (Hirsch) who encounters intrigue and danger on his road to racing glory. He is aided by parents Mom (Sarandon) and Pops Racer (Goodman), girlfriend Trixie (Ricci), little brother Spritle, his monkey Chim Chim and the mechanic Sparky ("Garage Days" co-star Kirk Gurry).
The generally masked Racer X is the most dangerous driver on the racing circuit, a daredevil who also works as a secret agent/mercenary on the side. In addition to being Speed's biggest rival on the track, the two men share a secret bond. Source
I just finished watching Tokyo Drift and it was so appalling. I remembered Initial D and had it not been Anthony Wong and Chapman To, the movie would have fallen flat totally with or without Jay Chou. I looked at the actors' list here and I hardly know anyone. Not surprising since I don't watch American movies. I vaguely remember Susan Sarandon of The Witches of Eastwick and that's about it. The only good is that there is Hiroyuki Sanada 真田廣之, the Blue Diamond Best Actor in Japan. I am sure he would play the coach to Rain.
This will be a kids' movie. The press conference would be at the end of this month in Berlin, Germany since the investors are from Germany.
