According to DVD French website, the movie version of Onimusha would be casting Takeshi Kaneshiro for the role and shooting will start in Februrary, March of 2008 and will be released in the fall of 2009.  The story although centered on 18th century Japan and samurais, will be shot in China because of cost. The production cost would be US$70,000,000 and because the set of castles would be elaborate, China and not Japan will be the locale for shooting.

This video game Onimusha III actually has some Chinese flavor.  The action choreographer for that game was Donnie Yen in 2004.  Every move of Takeshi and Jean Reno was designed by Donnie Yen who is not only an expert in martial art but fluent in Japanese and was conversing fluently with the workers on the set.

According to the manager of Takeshi, three years ago when Takeshi was promoting the House of Flying Daggers in Cannes Film Festival, the company has used Takeshi's image for the Onimusha movie poster already and has discussed with Takeshi back then but after three years, Takeshi has yet to receive the script. As to whether the content of the game will be adopted by the movie, it is not known yet.

There are some news that Onimusha is nearing a movie project finally and some sources said that Takeshi would be in it.  I'll keep an eye on it because if it does happen, my kids want to see it, whether it is Takeshi Kaneshiro or not. But of course if he is going to be in it, it would add to the familiarity. But anyway, Fulong is still not saying but those close to Gans is saying that filming starts in 2008 and will take a year and US$70 million to complete and Takeshi would be in it. It is guessed that it would be released after September 2009. Source

It has been reported that Takeshi may be involved in the movie version of Onimusha. Takeshi's manager said that the company has approached them a few years ago but they didn't elaborate on what it was about. And since they have not been contacted.
